Handcrafted soaps offer many advantages when compared to cheap, commercial store-bought soaps. To begin, ingredients are always natural and of a superior quality and very often organic, that means they are softer and more beneficial for your skin.

No added chemicals: contrary to commercial brands, handcrafted soaps do not contain any synthetic chemicals such as parabens, sulfates or phthalates that can irritate and damage your skin long term. Natural soaps have been around since ancient times, but their use has become less commonplace as large industrial soap companies began to produce cheaper, chemical-based alternatives.

Taher Naturals’ soaps and shampoos are good until about a year after they are produced because they have no preservatives. Nevertheless, there are some styles of soaps (Soap of Castille, Aleppo, etc.) that actually improve over time beyond this time frame.

While the specific chemistry of soap making may vary from product to product, soap is the product of a chemical reaction. The base of any handcrafted soap is a combination of oils and fats (olive, coconut, shea, etc.) that are combined in an alkaline solution or lye (potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide, most commonly known as caustic soda) that start the process of saponification. During that process, the oils react with the alkali to produce soap and glycerin molecules. 98 % of Taher Naturals soaps  are made in the traditional ‘cold’ process, the remaining 2 % are processed with added heat. All products are formulated with between 4-7% of oils (others such as “Pure Coconut” as high as 25%) which guarantee that after curing for one month or more, they no longer contain any alkali as the soap bar has been completely transformed into saponin (soap).

Normally, dermatologists recommend soaps that do not contain essential oils. The “Old-fashioned Oatmeal” soap is recommended for all sorts of skin conditions for its nurture and care of sensitive skin. Our Castille soaps are hypoallergenic and recommended for baby’s soft skin while the calm and soothing qualities of “Chamomile and Honey” are recommended for adults. All our handcrafted soaps are free of dyes, conventional perfumes, brighteners, chlorine and phosphates.

Acne occurs when tiny holes on the surface of the skin become blocked. Sebaceous glands are tiny glands found near the surface of your skin. To alleviate this, dermatologists may recommend a mild astringent. “Wild Orange” and “Simply Lemon” may temper oily skin, while “Black Lava”, “Rose Lava” and “Beautiful Rose Clay” will offer a gentle cleaning. Consult with your dermatologist. Finally, all of our soaps in the Lavender lines offer a soothing effect on scarred skin. There are many options when treating any skin condition, our best advice is to seek the counsel of a dermatologist or physician.

When considering any products for your children, always consult with your child’s pediatrician. Toddlers may safely begin to use body gels and shampoos as part of their daily routines; regarding soaps however, select one with hydrating qualities. Consider also the use of essential oils, whether for allergic reactions or for their aromatherapeutic qualities. Castille soap is a tried and tested, 100% natural olive oil containing no animal fats and are highly effective cleansers on skin and even though it can tackle the most stubborn grime, it’s also very hydrating due to saponified oils, meaning your child’s skin won’t feel overly stripped or squeaky.

Seek the advice of your physician, they will be best suited to guide you in all your cosmetic usage. Some naturals ingredients such as cinnamon, sage or cloves as well as some essential oils such as tea tree, mint and lavender may be of special concern during pregnancy for some expecting mothers. One caveat, consider that some commercial ‘healthy’ alternatives targeted to pregnant women and babies, contain nevertheless the same toxic chemicals present on all commercial soaps.  Again, our best advice is to consult with your physician or nurse practitioner. One final caveat, don’t be fooled by some commercial ‘healthy’ alternatives targeted to pregnant women and babies, they often contain the same toxic chemicals present on most commercial soaps.

Natural glycerin: handcrafted soaps retain the glycerin produced during the process of saponification and this is what hydrates and softens skin.

Customized: handcrafted soaps may be customized with ingredients that specifically target an individual’s problem skin such as greasy or dry skin, acne or a hyper sensibility to specific elements.

Ecological accountability: by choosing a handcrafted soap, you are consuming a sustainable and responsible product as they are produced by smaller companies accountable to their consumers and who generate only modest, smaller batches using earth-friendly ingredients and packaging. Additionally, the use of natural products does not generate the need for an inordinate amount water use in sewage treatment facilities and neither does it add toxicity to the soil or nearby sources of water.

Help sustain your local economy: When choosing a handcrafted natural soap, you are supporting a small local business owner that exhibits pride of craft in every bar or product. You’re also helping to preserve an ancient craft. When the large corporations cheapen their products with harsh chemicals, it produces a chain effect that ultimately harms their very clients and the environment we share. Make it a point to become a wise and savvy consumer of those products that are ultimately better for your family, the artisans and the earth.
